About the Wine

About the Wine
As with most close Italian families, the Salvestrins enjoy their daily life around good food and wine. However, the quandary was always having the right type of wine to go with the various Northern Italian food that Chef Susanne Salvestrin (the family Matriarch) often cooks. Being in the heart of ‘Cab Country’ there was only one logical solution...grow a world-class Sangiovese and make a ‘Super Tuscan’ that pairs well with her foods. Out of this effort was born ‘Retaggio’ (meaning ‘legacy’) that any good Italian son would do for his Mama...now that’s Amore!

Knowing that the Salvestrin family produces one the best Sangioveses in the valley, we were all very excited to explore their effort for a California “Super Tuscan” style wine...they did not disappoint in the least. We love what this unique blend offers – four varietals that work extremely well together – producing a wine that is a great balance of fruit and acidity which makes it such an easy drinking wine with or without food. Holding just the right amount of Merlot and Cab to the mix finishes out the palate which sometimes Sangiovese on its own lacks. An impressive everyday wine along with a great value.

Winemaker’s Quote:
“The color of dark rubies and garnets captures your eye. Enticing aromas of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry and warm earthly leather notes holds your attention while spicy characters linger on the entry with a balance of dark fruit and toasty oak on the mid palate followed by a long finish that is elegant yet complex and invites you back to experience it all over again.”

                      ~ Rich Salvestrin, Proprietor/Winemaker
