ST. CLEMENT - Chardonnay & Cabernet (see below)

About the Wine

About the Wine
The fruit for this Chardonnay comes from the Abbott’s Vineyard located in Carneros, which typically experiences a long, cool growing season due to the influence of the San Pablo Bay. The 2007 vintage produced superb white wines. The season began with a dry winter, this trend continued throughout the growing season, and received about 60 percent of normal precipitation overall. Warm spring temperatures resulted in an early bud break, bloom and set in the vineyards. Summer temperatures were mild aside from a brief heat spike. This added the boost of sugar development that we were looking for to complement the excellent acid structure in the Chardonnay.

Tasting Panel Notes
This Chardonnay was consistent with our panel in that it seemed as though we were tasting a very expensive Chardonnay. When it was unveiled at $25, collective hands went up to purchase the wine. Siding more on the leaner white Burgundian style, the wine still had lots of structure and vibrant fruit and cleansing acidity. Not your big oaky, buttery style, but what a great food wine… think Thanksgiving turkey dinner and all the trimmings. It is one of the few lighter style whites that can still come off ‘creamy’ as it warms up to room temperature.

“Signature aromas of cantaloupe and honeydew melon are complemented by notes of caramel, red apple and orange blossom. The palate follows through with a creamy texture and flavors of fresh melon, cloves and lemon custard. The wine finishes with a cleansing acidity, which makes it easy to pair with a variety of dishes.”

About the Wine
Steinhauer Ranch is located 2,000 feet above the Napa Valley on esteemed Howell Mountain. The fruit for this Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a relatively flat section of the vineyard surrounded by Redwoods. As a result, these vineyards experience a very long, even growing season and are often the last picked at Harvest. The juice is fermented on the skins in open top fermentors and punched down three times a day to extract all of the beautiful flavors and tannin in the wine. The wine is then barrel-aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels. All of these techniques combine to increase the depth and complexity of the wine – thus producing a well balanced Cabernet Sauvignon.

We love single-vineyard offerings and this Steinhauer Ranch from the famed Howell Mountain did not disappoint. Almost all of us went right to this mountain style fruit that has an herbal and concentrated berry aroma that makes you say, “oh yeah!” Exhibiting the distinct complexity from this region of Napa that is truly unique, this wine exemplifies its mountain terroir to the fullest. There is just a certain richness about the wine that draws you in and after an hour or so in the glass the finish seems to last and last...

Winemaker’s Quote:
“Pronounced aromatics of cranberry, raspberry jam, black cherry, rose petals, vanilla, clove, anise, and cooked blueberries are the introduction to this rich Cabernet Sauvignon. Enticing flavors of black currants, boysenberry jam, lavender, cocoa powder, and blackberry greet the palate before transitioning to complex flavors of brown spices and black plums on the mid palate. This well balanced wine offers big tannin and structure, promoting a long and elegantly structured finish with the potential to age for many years to come.”
