About the Wine About
the Wine As premium growers,
the Hill Family has a keen eye out for lots that can tell something
about the site and vintage. In 2006, it was this small Atlas Peak Cabernet
lot (2,000 ft. elevation), which is a blend of two different vineyards.
Bianchini is a steep site facing east on the top and Baker is a red dirt site
in Foss Valley with a southwestern exposure, featuring root stalks selected by
Doug Hill for their suitability to this thin soil with its rocky outcrops. With
the long season in 2006, these vineyards had small crops with small berries producing
grapes that have great color, ripe seeds, and shrivel toward the end for extra
concentration. | |

Tasting Panel Notes
Immediately in the glass we knew this was going
to be a fun wine. It had such a deep purple hue that showed the richness right
away. Then the nose...a flood of sweet black fruit jumps at you that you just
cannot get enough of. It was so enticing that we swirled and smelled for several
minutes before even tasting. Once we tasted, we were pleasantly surprised that
the fruit did not overwhelm the pure drinkability of the wine. Atlas Peak is one
of Napa’s newer AVA’s and producing some phenomenal fruit that is
quite unique to the region. Definitely one to watch.

Quote: “Though
young, the nose seems to carry the notes of wild sage and blackberry that surround
the vineyard, along with a black licorice and almost minty black cherry. The palate
is young and clean and strong, a bit pushy with the up front blackberry and cherry
fruit, and powering along to a rousing finish. This will soften and take on more
curves with time, but at this point, the wine is muscular and coiled – give
it a few minutes in the glass.”

About the Wine About
the Wine The 2007
Hill Family Estate Chardonnay, ‘Carly’s Cuvee’,
(namesake of daughter Carly Hill), came from a premium selection of vineyards
in the southern end of the Napa Valley and included hillside
fruit from the Atlas Peak appellation. Taking advantage of the
lovely warm weather early in the growing season in 2007, its ripeness and balance
allowed to give it a full year in barrel to assure polish and length. With a small
addition of Viognier to this crisp Chardonnay, the wine takes
on a perfect balance of fruit, aromatics and light oak that is ideal on its own
or with holiday foods. | |

Tasting Panel Notes
In a Chardonnay world of over-ripeness or abundance
of oak, Carly’s Cuvee impressed the panel with its balance of fruit, acid,
oak and fine touch of aromatics that the Viognier brings. If you like your Chardonnays
more on the crisp side but with good structure and fruit, this wine works for
a nice balanced white that pairs well with a variety of foods, or for sipping
out on the patio on its own. | | Hill

Quote: “The
Carly’s Cuvee has beautiful tropical fruit in the nose, with light peach
and vanilla notes. The palate is lovely and balanced, having deeply flavored pineapple,
peach, and ripe apple flavors, with a rich texture and a refreshing finish.”
